Buildings are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions in California. Approximately 10 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions in California result from the combustion of fossil fuels for space and water heating in buildings. Overall, building-related emissions account for approximately 25 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions in California. Reducing these emissions in buildings is an important component of meeting California’s climate targets to reduce greenhouse gases 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030.
